Welcome to Season 4 of Hot Flashes & Cool Topics and we are starting this season with the incredible Melissa Rivers.
Many will remember Melissa as her mother Joan River's partner for E's Red Carpet and Fashion Police. Her honest reviews of fashion mixed with her mother's equally honest but sometimes brutal commentary were a staple during every award season.
Melissa is also a podcaster and author. Her new book, Lies My Mother Told Me, Tall Tales form a Short Woman Is a laugh out loud read. The book is a satirical look into conversations that she imagines her mom would have and it will make you laugh and miss Joan Rivers even more.

Wednesday Aug 03, 2022
Wednesday Aug 03, 2022
Hormonal imbalances can cause weight gain, migraines, insomnia, acne, loss of libido and much more. On this week's episode, we speak to the authors of Our Hormones Our Health: how to understand your hormones and transform your life about cutting edge ways to balance our hormones.
Dr. Susanne Esche-Belke and Dr. Suzann Kirschner-Brouns share new research in the study of Epigenetics which can help midlife women balance hormones and maintain a healthy lifespan. Epigenetics studies how your behaviors and the environment can affect the way your genes work. Are you drinking from plastic water bottles? What is your stress level? How much sugar do you eat? There are many factors at play.
99.9% of humans share the same DNA. It is in that small window of difference where the causes of disease may be found. We discuss how environment and behaviors may switch a gene on in one person but not another.

Black Women and Menopause with Omisade Burney Scott
Wednesday Jul 20, 2022
Wednesday Jul 20, 2022
Did you know that black and latino women enter menopause earlier and may have more intense symptoms?
Did you know black and latino women have hot flashes longer on average than non-hispanic white women?
On this week's episode, we speak to Omisade Burney Scott, host of the podcast/media platform The Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause. Omisade shares her personal journey through menopause and the need for education and awareness. Omisade developed her platform because she wanted to "create[d] a space where the wildly diverse stories of different types of Black people could be held as sacred, including [her] own."
We discuss the SWAN study ( Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation) which is a multi-site longitudinal, epidemiologic study designed to examine the health of women during their middle years. We discuss the findings of the study that indicate menopause symptoms differ based on several factors including racial diversity.
It is vital that each person's journey through menopause is respected and acknowledged and we hope this episode starts an ongoing conversation with our listeners.
